DR.
THOMAS LAFEHR
Dr. Thomas LaFehr earned his Master of Science in Geophysical Engineering at the Colorado
School of Mines in 1962 and his Ph.D. from Stanford in 1964.
He was made a partner in a small, prestigious geophysical company and held the George
Brown Professorship Chair of Geophysics at Mines.
He founded two companies, EDCON, a geophysical company specializing in worldwide gravity
and magnetic data acquisition, processing, and interpretation, as well as LCT, Inc., which
holds 85 percent of all marine gravity surveys. Dr. Lafehr served as Chairman and
Chief Executive Officer of both companies.
Throughout his career, Dr. LaFehr has been involved with his professional society, the
Society for Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), having served as its Editor in 1972-73 and as
President in 1983-84. In 1997, he received SEGs highest honor, the Maurice Ewing
Gold Medal.
Dr. LaFehr is the preeminent spokesman, scientist and promoter for geopotential methods in
hydrocarbon exploration as well as in their more conventional uses in mineral exploration.
He currently serves CSM as a Senior Distinguished Scientist in the Department of
Geophysics.
